Carlos Checa put his reputation for wild riding behind him to take his first Superbike World Championship in style, holding off the young chargers, old rivals and former MotoGP star Marco Melandri to take the title with a round to spare.

Reigning champion Max Biaggi had a year to forget, but British teammate Leon Camier stepped up to carry the Aprilia flag in the closing rounds, plus Nori Haga was as entertaining as ever!
